Geoff Woolnough 1947

Geoff's daughter, Gill, has been in touch and sent these historic photographs from 1947. They are not great quality but they are invaluable, and they are also a year older than me so not doing too bad!

He went on to become part of the MOD electrical engineering team to test the atomic bomb in Australia in 1952, after which he had 6 children and worked for the MOD until he retired.

Simon Lumsden has an incredible collection of photographs and publishes them on the Bay Retro website and Facebook page.
This is a small selection that he has sent to me due to the RAF interest.

Archie Carter - 1973.
Archie was with the Fire Section and sent in these two photographs. See comment for explanation and some names.

Howard Smith - RAF Luqa Nov 1975 - May 1978
Text is in the Memories page, lots of names to look at and see if you remember them.

Mark Farrugia - Mark has very fond memories of the RAF's presence in Malta and was an enthusiastic plane spotter when he was a schoolboy, rushing down to the airfield fence after school to watch the aircraft movements.

I have posted Mark's memories in the 'Memories' Page.

Robert Fogg - His Father was at RAF Luqa 1963-65 and was big in the darts championships.

Robert said;My father was based at Luqa in the mid 60s. May 1963-May 1965 I lived there with him, my mother and sister in Paola. My father was a big darts player and played darts for a local bar and as a result entered and won the darts open championship 1964.I have some photos not just of him but from 2 programes for darts tournaments. they include pictures of english and maltese darts enthusiasts. I was just wondering if you would be interested in having them on your site to use.I know its probably not classed as a sport as such but some of your members may recognise some of the people in the pictures and the events they portray.

Jim Joyner - 1964 - 66. Father was in ATC, Flt Sgt James Douglas Joyner (W.O. at retirement)

Jim, and his family, lived in Tarxien Rd Luqa Village before moving to Depiro St, Sliema. Moved back to the UK to RAF Coltishall. Went to school at RN Tal Handaq. Jim took a lot of photos when he went to work with his father and the aircraft movement photographs are in the 'Aircraft Photos' galllery.
He lives in Australia now and will be revisiting Malta in January 2011
Jim was asked to write a feature article about his family's stay there for the 'Malta Independent' newspaper by a columnist who he sold a souvineer cigarette lighter to on eBay. I've put a pdf copy of the article on the Memories Page.

Steve Saunders - RAF Luqa Fire Section 1973-76

Michael Stead, known as 'Stix', sent the crest in 2013.

"The two group photos taken in 1978 possibly at the S.U
It was my 25th birthday and the gang organised a suprise party for me.
I can recognise the faces but can't put names to most of them. Jim Abbott is on the back row right hand side."

Ray Stokes - 1969-72. Ray was a J/T in the Radio Bay before going back to UK after being extended to make the tour 3 years (lucky beggar!). These photos were taken on his return visits during 2005 and 2008.
