Reg Ball - Masirah 1969
I served with Reg, although he was RAF police whilst I was a Telegraphist in the terminal commcen.
Managed to attend his funeral, in Stockport, a sad occasion which was very well attended by friends, family, and members of the association.
Reg was a stalwart of the association and, a regular hard worker who was loved by all that knew him.

Air Vice Marshall Michael Armitage - RIP - 25 December 2022 aged 92
Notified by Clive Micklefield.
I remember Armitage, as does Clive Micklefield, as he was Gp Capt C.O. of RAF Luqa during my time (Sep 1972 - Jan 1974). He was a well liked Officer and gentleman and will be sorely missed by all that knew him.
His tenure as C.O. would have been 1972 through to 1975 and he was involved in the KLM hijacking episode and worked closely with Prime Minister Dom Mintoff negotiating with the hi-jackers.
May he Rest in Peace
With thanks to Clive Micklefield for the notification and also the photograph of, the then, Gp Capt Armitage and Prime Minister Dom Mintoff.

Flt Lt Tony Sinclair - RIP - late February 2021
Received from Suzi and Niki, daughters of Tony.
We would like to advise everyone of the passing of my wonderful dad FltLt. TONY SINCLAIR - Shackleton and Nimrod pilot- we were based in luqa in the early 60's ... what an amazing place for my sister grow up!
Jumping off the rocks to dad in the sea at Teeny Beach - learning to horse ride at the polo club - I was only 3 - 5 at the time but remember so much of Malta. I know mum said it was her best ever posting!
Sadly dad passed away last week - the RAF ... his love of flying, in particular the Shack was so important in his life! An amazing father, grandfather, great grandfather and adoring husband to our wonderful mum.
We are all devastated but have a plan to scatter his ashes over Kinloss from an aircraft ... no more fitting a 'final flight' for dad.

Sqn Ldr Andy Bull - RIP - 01 November 2020
Received from AVM Roberts via Bob Hall
Some tragic news. I heard last night that Andy Bull succumbed to his battle against colon cancer two days ago.
A talented Nimrod MR2 pilot captain of considerable operational experience on 206 and CXX Squadrons, as well as a QFI, Andy was the ideal candidate to join the initial Seedcorn effort in Jacksonville and will be an enormous loss for the P-8 force.
He was an integral member of the RAF team on VP-30 and skippered the RAF crew who won the 2014 USN-wide annual ASW Fleet Challenge. Indeed, it can be argued, that it was this team who introduced the P-8 and its systems into the USN and taught them how best operate the aircraft. He had strong views on training and was instrumental in persuading Air Command to set up a UK training organisation based on the CFS model, rather than overly relying on VP-30 processes. After a very productive tour in the P-8 programme office at Air Command, Andy declined a lucrative offer of a civil airline job and returned to the USA to help to continue developing the P-8 systems, weapons and operating procedures on VX-1 at Pax River. He would have had a bright future.

Gp Capt David 'Benjy' Hives - RIP - 25 November 2019
Received from Bryn Wayt via Bob Hall
The Hon David Benjamin Hives died peacefully on 25 Nov 2019 aged 88. Much loved husband to Shirley, father to Sally, Dawn and the late Nigel. Grandfather and Great-Grandfather.
Born 9 June 1931 son of Ernest Hives, 1st Baron Hives and Gertrude Ethel Warwick.
Joined the RAF in 58th Entry RAF Cranwell and his career included fighter pilot and flying instructor, as Flt Lt 'Benjy' Hives. Air attache to the British Embassy, The Hague, 1976-78 and Air Commander of Hong Kong 1981- 83.
Comment from Bryn;
He was an absolutely delightful man, and an inspiration for me whilst I was a young F/O on 203 Sqn at Ballykelly.
He was one of the very few Senior Officers on the Squadron I looked up to. Wg Cdr Jack Fennel was another.
A memory from Bob;
He was one of the Flt Cdrs when I arrived on 203 in Aug 1968 and Jack Fennell was the CO. My first ‘solo' trip as a nav after confirming my cat & being allowed to fly as the only nav was as part of the minimum crew (capt Mike Clegg) taking ‘Benjy' to Benson on 1 Oct ’68 with all his & his family's kit en-route his posting to HQ Coastal Command at Northwood. We sat in the aircraft, 2 engines running and heaters on, waiting for him as he said his good-byes on the tarmac. It was raining (of course) and his sports jacket got very wet. After take-off as I turned my nav seat from facing forward to facing the desk all I could see at the back was what looked like smoke. I alerted the crew, but in reply this disembodied voice came back with ‘don’t worry, it’s only me steaming’. 10 minutes later it had cleared. When we got to Benson a service mini arrived to pick him up. We had to say to the Visiting Aircraft groundcrew that it wouldn’t be big enough. All the nose area was full of his ‘hunting & fishing’ kit (guns, rods etc) plus all the family's sporting equipment (tennis rackets, cricket bags, hockey sticks and more) and we had his bags at the back. It took us 20 minutes or more to unload it all and there was too much even for the Land Rover they had rustled up from somewhere!!

Andrew (Andy) Gallagher - RIP - 06 January 2020
Received from John 'Spider' Webb
Andy Gallagher passed away Monday (6 Jan) after a short illness.
His Air Force career stretches even more than mine, Ballykelly, Malta, Gibraltar and Kinloss to name just a few of his postings.
I'm sure most of you ex Coastal will know Andy and his Irish brouge accent. One more airman to patrol the skies and maybe play a bit of bridge, a game he loved.

Jenny Davies - RIP - 20 May 2019
Information received from Colin Pomeroy.
John Davies, who served on 203 Sqn from March 1973 to March 1976, has informed Colin that his dear wife Jenny passed away on 20th May from a massive heart attack. John and Jenny had been married for 47 years.
John himself had been very ill prior to this and had only returned home from Aberdeen Royal Infirmary 3 weeks before Jenny passed away, so her death was both unexpected and a great shock. Jenny was a kind, cheerful and bubbly person and will be sadly missed.

Ian Gray - Sgt Avionics - RIP 21 November 2010
From Keith Gray;
My Dad (Ian Gray), was a Sgt. in the avionics section. I believe he mostly worked on the Nimrods (203). Although he greatly missed his beloved shacks when they went. He was a tall (6'4") quiet man (from Fife, Scotland). He used to sail frequently at the sailing club at Marsa - (mira dinghy). Also played cricket sometimes. The family lived in Birzebbuga 1972 to 1973 , then moved to Safi for the rest of the tour. I attended Verdala RN School for the duration. Malta was by far the best ever posting.
Dad joined the RAF in the early 1950's and retired from the RAF at the beginning of 1980. We were also in Gib 1969 to 1971 - with the growlers. Other postings included Ballykelly 1964 -66, West Malling 1966-67, Kinloss 1968 -69 & 1971 -72, Valley 1975-76 and final posting at Cosford 1977- 1980. After the RAF, Dad did various Aerospace contracts including working on the Nimrod 2 (1980 to 1984). Various overseas contracts in Saudi, Oman and Papua New Guinea. He finally retired in 1994. Dad passed away on 21st November 2010 - he was 76.

Al Turner, ATC - RIP 22 February 2019
Informed by Bob Hall, message from Dick Doleman.
It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the death Al Turner, one of the better known characters of the ATC branch in our era.
Al died peacefully at home on the night of Friday 22nd February aged 78. As many of you will know, Al had suffered with MS for many years and the disease had progressed to the point where he was under ‘end of life care' at home and was confined to bed when he died. In recent times he had had a cancerous kidney removed and the lower part of one leg amputated but, with Diane’s magnificent support, he just kept on fighting and retained his sense of humour to the end.
As you already know, he was an immensely talented cartoonist working under the pseudonym ‘Renrut' and much of his ATC related work is in the Old and Bold library. He was also fondly known by other nicknames such as ‘Turnips’, ‘Spoons’ and ‘Soapy' to name but a few.

I wanted you to know as soon as possible as I know he always treasured your friendship.

Air Commodore Brian Speed - RIP - 06 April 2018
Received from Bob Hall, via Rod Saar and Ian Chisholm(The Growler)
I learnt early this morning the sad news that Brian Speed suddenly became unwell yesterday evening and died-it was probably a heart attack. Just two weeks ago we had had lunch with him and Marianne. In my 20 years in the RAF Brian replaced me three times (navigation instructor at Cranwell, Squadron Leader Ops Brixmis and Flight Commander 120 Sqn after I declined the posting). We both went to the French Staff College. He commanded 51 Sqn, was Assistant Commandant at Cranwell and had posts in MoD and 18 Group retiring as an Air Commodore. His first wife Beryl died over 12 years ago and he remarried just over 3 years ago. We had become good friends, it was an immense shock to get this news this morning-he was 77.

From Mike Hill
Another sad loss of one of the characters.
I'll never forget his response in the Sim when he got a filter block indication as they started rolling - "Holy Mary, Mother of God, would you look at that, then! I think you'd better stop!" By which time they'd already rotated. (And I wish I could type in an Irish accent!)
Another Paddy story from Dave Bidgood;
Another Sim epic when he was doing a check with Grp. Capt. John Pack, CO of Kinloss at that time. On the take off roll Paddy calls out "Reject Reject" and after stopping John Pack says "Mr. Hand the call is Abort Abort" Paddy then says "I know that Sir, but I'm a Catholic and abortion is illegal!!!"
Paddy was obviously quite a character, another story from Ivan Farmer;
I was sitting alongside Paddy one time flying from Cyprus back to Malta. The Luqa Padre had taken advantage of the Nimrod flight to hitch a lift back. He came up and sat in the flight deck for a while and Paddy handed him a rolled up magazine saying "would you like to read Airclues to pass the time"
The Airclues when unrolled was Playboy or similar at the centre fold. The Padre took it well and quick as a
flash said "did you say Airclues or hair clues.

Colin Hughes AFC - RIP 05 January 2016
Advised by Colin Pomeroy - It is with a very heavy heart that I write to let you know that 'Huggiss' passed away today at his home on his beloved Isle of Anglesey after a long illness.
Photograph courtesy of Colin, showing 'Huggiss' accepting the Fincastle trophy in 1973.
N.B. by DJR - A rather larger than normal commemoration notice but I think that goes with the enormous amount of respect and affection which has has been expressed at the passing of Huggis.
Dedication from Bryn;
It is with an equal heavy heart that your sad news reaches the depths of my heart - I enjoyed mixing with him for decades, and enjoyed his splendid laughter filled company since I joined “Coastal” where our paths crossed many a time; then after leaving the RAF being in the same airline (Dan Air Services Ltd) on the BAC1-11 together, where he was a fabulous Training Captain.
After we both retired from aviation we exchanged emails often and of course the odd phone call.
We have indeed lost a true legend in Colin. An astounding person and flyer.
RIP Colin - DCO to the ultimate standards.
From Mike Graham;
I am saddened to hear that Huggiss has left us. I first met him on 205 Squadron, Changi when I was a young Sergeant and some years later I was posted to Malta as a shiny newly commissioned AEO and had the luck to be put on his crew. He was very kind to me and gave me confidence. I had great respect for him as my Captain and I soon settled in. He was a very special man. RIP Colin .
EULOGY for Colin; edited (Sent by Bryn Wayt)
The family moved to his beloved Isle of Anglesey in 1944 when he was seven years old, to live on a farm that father had bought and farmed with a small herd of dairy cattle, pigs and some arable land.
These early years, with his two brothers, Derek and younger Robin as play pals, were invigorating and formative, but also hard, for the farm had neither mains electricity nor running water. In fact on one occasion drought conditions led to water being delivered by the local fire engine. Later father went into the poultry processing business and the boys became proficient at despatching, plucking, and dressing all kinds of poultry.
Colin carried out basic flying training during 1962 and 63 at RAF Church Fenton, on the Jet Provost, and then advanced flying training at RAF Oakington on the Varsity. Then to Coastal Command, but now as a pilot (having been a “siggie” for one tour) passing through the Maritime Operational Training Unit at Kinloss, in Scotland, during the winter of 1964 and 65.
At Kinloss he became close friends with fellow new pilot Dave Castle (later a DA “skipper”), who was to become a life-long friend and David is bitterly disappointed that he can’t be here with us today.
Colin left the squadron in 1975 on retiring from the Royal Air Force and, armed with his civil licences, joined the independent airline Dan Air, expecting to fly Comets, but was - fortunately as it turned out - allocated to the BAC one eleven fleet and later to the Boeing 737. As a Dan Air captain he always welcomed to the flight deck his ex-RAF colleagues, still continued to maintain a lookout for snorts and periscopes and particularly enjoyed flying in and out of RAF Kinloss when Inverness Airport was closed for major runway resurfacing and extension.
When Dan Air was bought by British Airways in 1992 only some of the B-737 pilots were kept on, and Colin then became a British Airways training captain. Arguably the ultimate achievement for the lad from the farm.
Ill health struck Colin in his BA days, but he remained with the company as a highly valued simulator instructor and on regaining his private pilots licence and, now resident back on Anglesey, enjoyed flying the Piper Cherokee of the Caernarfon Flying Club.
This afternoon we are bidding goodbye to a no nonsense, cat loving character of extreme charm, great flying and tactical skill, generosity, dubious DIY skills, and the occasional rough diamond demeanour which masked a heart of gold, and - of course - choice turns of phrase from the periphery of the King's English. A pilot and sub-hunter extraordinaire, he was the cold war equivalent of Coastal Command’s world war two ace Sqn Ldr Terry Bulloch DSO & Bar, DFC & Bar.
His departure truly leaves a ‘hole’ that will never be filled. One can only envy and be sorry in equal measure for St Peter at the Golden Gates.
Iachi da old friend. I - and everyone gathered here today - will miss you enormously

Tony King - RIP - 12 January 2015 (Former O.C. 203 Sqdn)
I have just received a message from John Platt saying that Colin Patterson had informed him that Tony King (former OC 203 Sqn) passed away on Monday
A tribute to Tony from Mike and Patsy Graham.
As a Squadron Boss, family man and (sometimes to my cost) rugby referee he had a lovely way of dealing with people. During his time on 203 morale soared and we were a very ‘happy squadron’. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends. I’m sure there will be a great turn out at his funeral. Love and respect from my family here in New Zealand.
Information from 'Bob', 203 Squadron.
Retired RAF Regt Wg Cdr G A (Tony) KING, born 28 Jun 32, died on 12 Jan 15 aged 82. Having failed the eyesight test for aircrew, he was offered a RAF Regt Cadetship and undertook his officer training at the RMA Sandhurst. He was commissioned on 5 Feb 53 and served initially on the Queen’s Colour Sqn. Significantly, he was the Queen’s Colour Bearer when the first Queen’s Colour was presented by HM The Queen in the Ballroom of Buckingham Palace in 1953. He served subsequently on two further RAF Regt sqns before becoming a ‘RAF Regt Pilot’ (having passed the aircrew medical this time) and flew Shackleton MPAs from RAF Kinloss. He was then posted to 206 Sqn RAF at RAF St Mawgan. Eventually he transferred to the General Duties (Flying) Branch, was promoted to Wg Cdr on 1 Jan 74 and retired eventually on 12 Sep 83.

Squadron Leader Terry Bulloch, who has died aged 98, was a pilot in Coastal Command who made the greatest number of sightings and attacks against German U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic. By the end of the war he had been credited with sinking four, twice the number by any other pilot.

With a heavy heart and great regret I have to tell you that Beth died a few hours ago. She passed on peacefully with Dominic and I in attendance, after a recurrence of pneumonia in her cancer damaged lung. She suffered many indignities and much pain over the last five years, but she bore it all with a strong resolve. Of late she was very, very tired; may she now find lasting peace.

Tim Newman - RIP 30 July 2011
Mike Peaker informed us of the following:
I have just had a phone call from Jeremy Nash, who is staying with the Tim and Veronica at their farmhouse in France, to say that Tim died of a heart attack last night. Apparently they had all had a good evening together and Tim decided to go for a dip in the pool. It became clear that all was not well, and they pulled Tim out but 'he died in my arms' to quote Jeremy.
What devastating news. Tim was up at Kinloss at the end of May for the disbandment parade and in very good spirits. He was only 56.
