Colin Yorke, Son of Flt Lt Eddie L. Yorke, CO 1151 MCU 1954 - 1956
My Dad was at 1151 from 1954 to 1956 first as C.O. (taking over from 'Bud' Fisher) and later on extension of his tour stepping back to enjoy a more practical period out of the office. I have many photos of this happy time including the Suez Crisis, the last of the Sunderland's, the Malta riots etc. (N.B. DJR - Photos published below)
My book - 'Nor Fish Nor Fowl' tells his story including time on the armoured target boats, war service as Coxswain of HSL 102 and on Whalebacks etc. but goes on to include two chapters of his time at 1151.
The work of the unit at that time included just about every role that could be expected of an RAF Marine Craft Unit. It was also an eventful time:- the Suez Crisis. the Malta riots, the last of the flying boats, development of helicopters etc. It was also the tail end of a way of life at 'the fag end of Empire'.
I have 'given' "Nor Fish Nor Fowl" to the ASR/MCU club to market and make what they can from. I think they will sell it @ around £15 plus P&P. If anyone is interested please contact Joe Thomas on email address [email protected]
In spite of taking two whole chapters my account of our time in Malta is heavily edited and I have a great deal of photographic material I had to edit out of the printed book.
(N.B. DJR - Hope you enjoy the many great photographs below)
